O MOST MERCIFUL JESUS, Lover of souls I pray Thee, by the agony of Thy most Sacred Heart, and by the sorrows of Thine Immaculate Mother, cleanse in Thine Own Blood the sinners of the whole world who are now in their agony and who are to die this day. Amen.

HEART OF JESUS, once in agony, have pity on the dying.

"Mother of Mercy, Dispenser of Divine Graces, Dove of God, we dedicate this blog to God's greater glory, that His Priest, Father Leo Franklin McNamara, may become known to the world for the edification of souls, and God's greater glory"

"A whispered prayer of a sinner on earth, is thunder in Heaven."

The following is taken from a discourse given by one of the Faithful.

Father McNamara had the stigmata.

The crucifix pictured is the one that bled on several occasions.

For your consideration:

Fr. McNamara slept on a daybed, lived in a loft at St. Adrian’s Church, not in the rectory.
He did not eat meat for 45 years, never had a housekeeper.  Was always faithful to his priestly vows and the true Mass.

Ordained in Rome on July 6, 1913, first Mass on July 7, 1913
In 1928 he was assigned to St. Adrian’s parish in south Chicago.  Established a beautiful church and school.  Remained there until death on October 26, 1973.

He had a Crucifix that bled 12 times, the first time on September 17th, 1937 and the last time in 1941.  The first time the five wounds bled he was blessing Sacred Heart badges, which he gave out by the barrel full.  The corpus bled profusely and the corpus became life-sized and sat on the edge of Fr. McNamara’s bed.  Jesus said, “Seeing is believing.  I put you to the test.”  “When you speak for me, I will answer for thee.”  Jesus said this to him.

Fr. McNamara calls his torments from the devil “The Evil One.”

Cooking story:  fellow priests did gourmet cooking on Saturday nights.  The Little Flower appeared to him and laid before him his life.  She said, “What a waste.”  Fr. gave up the group after that.

Dying nun in Chicago:  He went to visit her at the nun’s request.  When he arrived she asked why he didn’t bring the Crucifix.  Jesus had told the nun about the bleeding crucifix.  He went back to the church to get it.  The nun asked him to leave it with her and he did.  She had it held up so she could venerate it, and the cross bled all over her bed spread and clothes so that they were soaked.  Other nuns witnessed this event.

About the 6th time the Crucifix bled, he reported it to his superiors.  They kept vigilance on him.  Many called him crazy.  To justify his sanity, Fr. kept three medical affidavits by three independent doctors, one a Catholic, one Jewish doctor, and one protestant specialist.  The complete physicals done proved his medical stability.  No history of mental illness, yet he was persecuted concerning the crucifix and other miracles.

Fr. McNamara told this story to narrator Mary:  Two burly priests and some of Cardinal Cody’s henchmen came to harass him.  He showed the medical evaluations as proof.

Fr. McNamara was called by a mother whose son was a seminarian.  The son found out he had tuberculosis and could not become a priest.  The man was distraught to the point of taking his own life.  Fr. made a trip to see the young man.  On the road to meet him, Fr. picked up a young man (who looked like the young priest) hitchhiking.  The figure had a red thumb, and really was the devil when he entered Fr’s vehicle.  Fr. McNamara immediately felt a burning pain in the back of his neck.  He reached into his bag and took out a small crucifix, and put it to the sore area on his neck.  The devil figure disappeared.
Fr. continued on to the mother’s house, but the son had gone to bed, and they decided Fr. would speak to him in the morning.  The lady showed Fr. to another bedroom for the night.  Fr. woke up tied with chains to the bed by the devil.  Christ came alive again and released him from the chains.  The next day Fr. talked to the young man and consoled him.

Fr. was supposed to take a trip with his mother to St. Louis, but she became ill and he went on the trip without her.  The devil entered his car again.  The devil told him to have a car accident and end his life because the people Fr. was going to meet with wouldn’t believe what he would say anyway.  Disturbed, he drove to a place that would have a crucifix, so he went to the Bishop’s home, but the Bishop wasn’t home.  So instead he went to a motel.  While looking out the window at the motel, he saw what looked like an ocean, and out of the water the devil appeared as a serpent and tried to climb up the motel wall to get to him.  The devil was constantly tormenting Fr. McNamara.

A mother in Chicago with an afflicted daughter:  The mother borrowed money to take the daughter to see Padre Pio.  Padre Pio asked the mother why she came all the way to Europe when there was a priest on the south side of Chicago she could have taken the daughter to.  Padre Pio was referring to and named Fr. McNamara.

Narrator Mary’s brother from age 49 was blind.  The brother and his wife were Novus Ordo.  He went to “communion” and realized the person was giving the host with the left hand.  The brother asked his wife (Mary’s sister-in-law), “when did they allow a priest to use his left hand?”  She replied it was a lay person.  The brother was upset and this incident allowed Mary to coax her brother to go see Fr. McNamara for a blessing hopefully to cure his eyes.

Fr.’s desk was always disheveled, but he knew what was there.  When the brother and sister-in-law went for the blessing, Fr. read the woman’s mind and gave her a silk piece of Our Lady of Taiwan she coveted.  No one had told him that she admired it.

Holy Name of Jesus story:   The first time Mary met Fr. McNamara was with a group of 10-12 of her family members, cousins, aunts, etc.  At the end of the night she said goodbye last purposely so she could share a concern of hers and ask a private prayer request.  He referred to her by name (Mary) although she was certain he had not been told her name.  Fr. told her to put the Holy Name of Jesus under the pillows and around her home, and that invoking the Holy Name was very powerful.  She went home and began telling her very jealous husband about having spent the evening in the company of this holy priest.  The husband who was getting ready for his night shift at work was belittling and skeptical.  She said something to the effect of, “You should choke on those words!” in defense of the priest.  The husband began to choke.  Mary didn’t know what to do, so she called Fr. McNamara on the phone.  He told her to get a tea bag and warm water in a cup (along with some other ingredient she couldn’t remember), and slowly pour it down his throat.  Fr. saying that was a decoy for the miracle he performed.  She watched the husband’s tongue loosely fall back into its proper place.  Then he went on to work as usual.  The next day she put the name of Jesus throughout their home, and immediately good things began to happen.  Mary swears that after that incident she and her husband talked out their difficulties, he apologized and they went on to have a wonderful marriage.

Mary’s son died after suffering three years of cancer.  Fr. McNamara said the son would go straight to heaven because he had suffered so much.  Mary disbelieved Fr a bit and requested to put the Name of Jesus on his death bed, which Fr. allowed.  She went on to tell many people (on behalf of Fr. Leo) to put the Holy Name of Jesus around them.

Fr. McNamara was a big man, about 6’5”.  The devil at one point threw him down with a thud.  Friends witnessed the sound, and the sound of the devil throwing him around the room.  This incident was shortly before Fr. died.

Sometimes the devil appeared to him as an exotic dancer or a poor soul.  Fr. would take out his Crucifix and the devil would vanish.

******************************************************************

May God our Lord in His infinite and supreme goodness be pleased to give us His abundant grace, that we may know His most holy will, and entirely fulfill it.

As for Father McNamara and his life’s story, and having it told in this forum;

“ I entrust this whole matter in the hands of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, “Mother of the Priest par excellence, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and through Him, of all priests in whom she forms her Son”.

Deo Gracias.

  3. Thank you for posting this. It is very consoling to suffering Catholics. May God continue to be be glorified in this holy priest.

Doesn't anyone have any of the Blood soaked linens? Surely these are as great a treasure as the cross.

Father McNamara, please pray for us.

  4. I read a post on a blog that said when souls would ask Fr. McNamara's advice on the current situation in the Church he would reply, "Wait for Peter."

I also heard that Cardinal Cody, (that fox), buried all the relics associated with Fr. McNamara and had the spot covered over with a parking lot. I assume these would have been the Bloody linens etc...

I know a lovely Catholic lady who feels compelled to write a biography about Fr. for posterity but who is alive that was living when he was to help? It's been so long since his death. I pray a biography will be published for the sake of young Catholics.

    1. If Fr. McNamara was alive, he would tell us to place ourselves on our knees before the Crucifix, and beg for God's Mercy. Pray very much for perseverance, for yourselves and your children, and pray for holy priests and religious. Entrust your cares to Our Blessed Mother, and she will not abandon you. Our Lady of Good Success, pray for us! Fr. Leo Francis McNamara, pray for us! St. Maximina, pray for us! St. Michael the Archangel, come to our defense! With God all is possible.

For those of us born in the wake of Vatican II, Mr. Yallop's "In God's Name" is a good refresher course. In it one learns of the "marriage" of Cardinal Cody and Archbishop Marcinkus. From such a union it is impossible to produce good fruit. And, when rotten fruit falls, it lands very near the trunk of the tree.

"Strengthen ye the feeble hands, and confirm the weak knees. Say to the fainthearted: Take courage, and fear not: behold your God will bring the revenge of recompense: God himself will come and will save you."

"Then shall the eyes of the blind be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped."

    2. Cardinal Cody was much more a wolf than a fox. He had a funeral mass said at Fr. McNamara's death with an empty casket, to hide it from the public. Father would not allow them to desecrate his body and had the private service in Michigan.

It is one year ago today that the last of the Byzantine Poor Clare Sisters, Sr. Lucille Tepper BNSC died. May she RIP. Has anyone been to the Monastery since to verify St. Maximina is still there? Please post if you have information. Those associated with the Pachamama idol worshippers need not respond. We won't believe you anyway.

After all these years, hopefully the relics weren't buried like Cody wished. May Almighty God's Holy Will be accomplished!

    5. I was very privileged to know Fr. McNamara when I was in my early teens. We would visit him at St. Adrian's Parish in Chicago and his family home in Michigan. I was very young to understand all that he was at the time, I only knew that being in his presence was like no other, he was so humble, kind, meek and mild, a mirror of Our Lord. I was also privileged to have seen St. Maximina's relics at St. Adrian's Church in Chicago where he had her in the back rooms behind the sacristy. I want to answer the question above about her, yes she is still at 6688 Cady Rd. The Monastery of the Poor Clare Nuns, in North Royalton, Ohio. I was there today and saw her and St Hyacinth. The property is in a trust now, and there is a gentleman who takes care of the property. The Trust is in the name of Sr. Lucille Tepper and an Archbishop and a Brother. I was made to understand that the property would be sold, and the gentleman who takes care of it, was not certain what would be done with St. Maximina and St. Hyacinth. I hope and pray that a shrine would be built for them.

    6. Father McNamara's sister Helen was a nun with the Sisters of Providence at St. Mary of the Woods, near Terre Haute, Indiana. Her name was Sr. Gregory and she died in 1964. She is buried there in the convent cemetery, a very beautiful place, with 2000+ other Sisters, including the foundress of the order, Mother Theodore Guerin. Sr. Gregory is the only member of Fr. Mac's immediate family not buried near him in Douglas.

  6. To anonymous above and all those posting on Father Leo McNamara.... I know of the lady who is attempting to write a Biography on Fr. Mac and I will say this, the information she has thus far collected and much of what is posted on this site, is not completely truthful because there are some who have distorted the stories through the years and much heresay keeps getting repeated....There are also those, through love of recognition and notoriety, are lying about knowing Fr. Mac and the stories they are pretending to know first hand, are not even correct. I pity their souls. I will say this much, leave it alone. Fr. Mac made it very clear before his death that no "book" was ever to be written about him. He left specific words for his sister that if anyone were ever to attempt to publish a "book" about his life; that the family was to "sue the hell out of them." This saint did not want to be known ..... leave it alone.

    1. It seems as though the people writing here knew Fr. McNamara. Sorry to say, I didn't. I have however read the words of Christ in the Gospel of St. John (17:17-23): "Sanctify them in truth. Thy word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. And for them do I sanctify myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth. And not for them only do I pray, but for them also who through their word shall believe in me; That they all may be one, as thou, Father, in me, and I in thee; that they also may be one in us; that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou hast given me, I have given to them; that they may be one, as we also are one: I in them, and thou in me; that they may be made perfect in one: and the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast also loved me."

Also, Matthew (6:33): "SEEK YE THEREFORE FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD, AND HIS JUSTICE, AND ALL THESE THINGS SHALL BE ADDED UNTO YOU."

Good people, seek, and don't ever let anyone tell you, you shouldn't. Intercede to Our Blessed Mother, and She will guide your every step. Above all, pray...and never stop praying.

Anonymous above, if Fr. McNamara was the holy priest people say he was, I doubt he used words like "sue the hell out of them." Your tail reveals you. You might want to consider the words of St. Augustine instead: "In matters of certitude, let there be unity; in matters of doubt, let there be liberty. Let there be charity in all."

I for one, sure would like to hear more from the people who really knew Fr. Leo McNamara.

    3. Why all the secrecy about this priest? Is there something to hide? If he was a good priest, let it be known for the salvation of others. If there was something unGodly about him, bring it out too; not to damage his name, but to settle the speculation that surrounds him. It's not like the rest of the dirty laundry about the clergy hasn't already been made public.

      To Anonymous August 14th:

What makes you such an authority? You should remember that those committing sins of omission are just as guilty. Maybe more so, considering what people say about the holiness of Fr. McNamara.

  8. Doesn't the fact that the Grappin is sowing his cockle of strife and dissension on this subject demonstrate how he hates the sanctity of Father MacNamara and wants it buried in the dustbin of history?

Let God decide if the sanctity and extraordinary favors of his servant and holy Levite shall be revealed. May it be His holy will to do so to strenghten and console the hearts of suffering Catholics and encourage the young by Father MacNamara's example, but ultimately for His own glory and the glory of our Holy Mother Church.

Father McNamara, holy Levite of the Eternal High Priest, pray for us.

  10. I was recently privileged to visit Fr. McNamara's grave. The lovely shrine placed there by some devotee(s) is in sad disrepair. It is so discomforting that there is no indication whatsoever that a great saint has been buried at this site. It makes one feel as our Lord weeping over Jerusalem. Christians could say today, "Christendom, Christendom, if only thou hadst known the things that are to thy peace. But now they are hidden from thine eyes..." God have mercy on us!

"O Lord, Jesus Christ, have mercy on me, the sinner!"

    1. I am not sure Fr. McNamara would have appreciated any prayer "imprimatured" by Lefebvre. If he believed the SSPX was the answer, why did he tell Catholics to stay home and say their prayers there, even recommending the St. John's Mass of Fr. Crawley-Boevey?

Many years ago I met an elderly woman who was a Traditionalist and said she had once known parishioners of Fr. McNamara's. According to her, Father had a large collection of relics he did not want to fall into the hands of the Chicago diocese. He had one of his devoted parishioners sew up a quilt for him, and in each square she placed one of the relics. According to this woman, he never slept without that quilt.

I have no way of knowing if this is true or not, but it has comforted me for many years. Just thought I would pass it on and see perhaps if anyone could verify it.

    2. Like you, Steadfast and True, I wonder what advice Fr. McNamara would give us in the present crisis, and whether he would approve of our time spent responding to blog comments instead of constantly praying our Rosary like his friend Padre Pio. Quite possibly he would smile, pat us on the head with a priestly blessing and send us back to our daily duties. We all know what they are.

As far as Abp. Lefebvre and the SSPX, I will say, if not for the exposure to the faith through the Society in the ‘70’s, I and my family might not have remained Catholic while most of those around us fell away or followed the water-downed version post-Council. The Byzantine Rite was a safe-haven for a while too. I don’t personally affiliate with the SSPX anymore, but maybe Fr. McNamara could foresee the present situation, with the Society on the verge of regularization with the modernists. Perhaps he gave different advice to different individuals, knowing what spiritual obstacles they would face in the future. It seems from the comments on this blog that there are persons of varying opinions, regarding the crisis. The Catholic Church in 2017 has been reduced to a remnant, as Fr. McNamara predicted. Blessed are those who have memory of him and his advice, as they most certainly were chosen for special roles in the salvation of others.

It is interesting you posted during the Rogation days, and that I stumbled upon your words. Traditionally the 3 days prior to the Ascension feast day were reserved for prayer for a good harvest, and for processions and Litanies, recited to appease the anger of God. How necessary our prayers are, for a great spiritual and corporal harvest, and for the priests and religious of our time. The Evil One pursues them the most fiercely. Let us continue our prayer, and leave the details to God and Our Holy Mother.

Any idea what became of the quilt of relics? It is both comforting and frightening!

“Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in Thee.”

p.s. I enjoyed your “Cry of the Little Ones.”

    1. I also was baptized by Fr. Mac and went to school at St. Adrian’s for all 8 years. I remember Sts Hyacinth and Maximina in the back. My mother would take me there to see them or friend and I would stop after school let out. I did not remember the bleeding cross until I meet a Sister teaching at my children’s local Catholic school who was familiar with Fr. Mac and the cross. (Her parents had been married at St. Adrian) Didn’t realize til much later what a blessing all that was!!

  31. I lived the life of a sinner, although baptized as an infant. I was around 24 when I began to attend Mass and receive the Sacraments again. I had a son out of wedlock before that time. 11 years have gone by and I am being persecuted by my son's mother (not a Catholic). Most recently she had claimed that I physically abused my son, she had pictures of bruises, and I'm afraid my son, 12 years old, went along with it. However, I believe he is innocent. I was desperate! DCS had an open investigation and came knocking on my door, the Police had an open investigation and came knocking at my door threatening me that I would soon be read my rights, she obtained an Order of Protection against me so I could not talk to or see my son, and she filed for full custody.

I had found, a few years back, one of the relic cards printed in Kansas City, Missouri by the Saint Michael's League while looking through my Grandmother's belongings which she asked me to browse through to see what we could give to the ULRA by way of mail. It (the card) contained 4 distinct prayers, two pictures of the Holy Man, and the words of Consecration of the Sacred Species in the Mass on the back of the card. I asked her if I could keep it. Also, our parish priest has the cincture which belonged to Fr. McNamara. It is very long and woven. He wants us to ask God for favors through Fr. McNamara's intercession.

I took this Holy Card and began a novena and asked Fr. McNamara everyday my son was gone to ask God to give him back to me.
Two months went by, and the worst sufferings I have ever had to endure. I had COVID during that time with a temp of 104.5, so did the parish priest and oblate have COVID and nearly killed the priest(I help the parish and the priest and oblate). I won't go into detail but I suffered, and justly so. However, God gave me back my son. DCS came back and said it was an unsubstantiated accusation. I truly believe Fr. McNamara was the one who obtained for me this desperate favor. I told him if he did, I would promote his cause for veneration, beatification and canonization. This is my humble beginning.

    2. What a blessing your son was returned to you! Thanks be to Almighty God, and to our Heavenly Friends, including Fr. McNamara for their intercession! I will offer my Rosary tonight in thanksgiving for the gifts you received. Keep your dear son close to you.
Did your grandmother know Fr. Mac personally? If so, please ask her what she remembers and post here. God bless you!

  32. I remember Fr. Mac when I was young. I attended St. Adrian school from 1964-1972. My mother knew Fr Mac and would go to his Mass held every day. Somedays I'd join her at mass when it was lunchtime at school. She told us many stories about Fr.: the Cross, the devil tormenting him, his miracles. I actually was with St. Maximina when she was in Fr.'s room behind the sacristy. I was waiting for Fr. to come down stairs so we could talk. I would usually do that after school. There was a cloth over St. Maximina. I sat there for a while and wondered what was under the cloth. I never peeked. Within the week Fr. revealed her. So many went to see her! In these first days there was no blood to be seen but shortly thereafter you could see where the blood appeared! I felt honored to have witnessed my first miracle. I would love to see Fr. Mac become a Saint one day. I have a picture of St.Maximina on my nightstand and a bookmark of Fr. Mac.
